Ugandan classroom innovation increases student confidence

Nakyanzi Jalia created The Writing Treasure Trove to address the challenges her students face in the classroom.

Nakyanzi Jalia, a teacher at Mackay Memorial College in Uganda has embraced a creative learning innovation to help children learn basic reading and writing. Students in her classroom struggled with writing, especially describing things that they had experienced, and confidence in speaking in front of others. This led Nakyanzi to come up with a plan - The Writing Treasure Trove - to help students to learn how to write in a fascinating way.

Students in her classroom say it has helped them to gain confidence in their writing ability, developed their critical thinking skills, improved their vocabulary, and increased their confidence in communication.

“My dream is to inculcate a culture in those students that I touch, that culture of writing, where someone writes something from the depths of themselves. So I am starting from Mackay Memorial College to come up with writers that will be talked about in the days to come.”

Nakyanzi believes that students benefit from The Writing Treasure Trove in numerous ways, no matter what their career aspirations are, and that the sub-skills developed are needed everywhere.
